Philadelphia South

32 neighborhoods - a quarterly race to the lowest crime rate.

Crime Trends: Neighborhoods compared - each quarter from Q1 2022

Philadelphia as a whole averaged 25.7 crimes for every 1,000 residents per quarter in Q2 2026, while South averaged 33.4 (leaving out 1 place with almost no residents), hence it is generally less safe when all crimes are considered.

How do the 32 neighborhoods of South compare? In Q2 2026 the police recorded 9,590 crimes across them, 33.4 for every 1,000 residents. That is 4.2% above a year earlier and 31.9% above Q1 2022, the first quarter we track.

Pennsport has the lowest rate of the everyday neighborhoods (9.0 per 1,000), followed by Society Hill (11.5) and East Passyunk (12.0). Upper Kensington has the highest (67.6).

Use the RACE CHARTS below to watch all 32 PHILADELPHIA SOUTH NEIGHBORHOODs race across 18 quarter periods from Q1 2022 to Q2 2026 - one crime category at a time or all together. The race chart can be used to compare average crime rates by category against Philadelphia's average.

Reported Safety Incidents

In Q2 2026: property incidents were 40% (3,845), violent incidents were 22% (2,142), vehicle crimes were 13% (1,262) and public order incidents were 9% (868).

Recorded crime here is grouped into violent crime, property crime (burglary and theft), vehicle crime and public order offences, so you can compare how safe each neighborhood is for the kind of crime that matters to you.

Read category comparisons with care. A category that jumps while the total hardly moves looks like a change in how offences are classified, not in what happened: Q1 2024: vehicle down 32% while the total moved 7%. The whole-area rate is the steadier guide.

Places we left out, and places to read with care

Left out: Port Richmond. They have almost no residents: their crimes are against visitors, so a rate per resident says little about living there.

Center City East (376.9 per 1,000 from 303 crimes among 804 residents), Chinatown (21.5 per 1,000 from 38 crimes among 1,768 residents), East Poplar (29.1 per 1,000 from 58 crimes among 1,990 residents), Riverfront (173.2 per 1,000 from 387 crimes among 2,235 residents), Callowhill (45.6 per 1,000 from 104 crimes among 2,279 residents) and Greenwich (13.9 per 1,000 from 32 crimes among 2,303 residents) are places with few residents (under 3,000): a rate on so few people says little about living there, so they are not named as the lowest or highest.

Rates are recorded crimes per 1,000 residents, quarter by quarter; where a neighborhood has fewer than 100 residents the rate would be worked out on 100 (those places are left out of the race). A count of recorded crime is not a verdict on any neighborhood.
