A little history

Lewisham in London. London has been a major settlement for nearly 2,000 years, and its ancient core, the City of London, was founded by the Romans as Londinium. The London Borough of Lewisham is in south-east London and forms part of Inner London. Its principal settlement is Lewisham, and the borough contains Blackheath, Goldsmiths, University of London and Millwall F.C.

Notable neighbourhoods in Lewisham include:

Deptford. Deptford lies on the south bank of the River Thames and is named after a ford of the River Ravensbourne. From the mid 16th century to the late 19th it was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Dockyards, a major shipbuilding dock that attracted Peter the Great to study shipbuilding. The area is also associated with the knighting of Sir Francis Drake by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind.

Forest Hill and Lewisham. Forest Hill is a district on the South Circular Road and is home to the Horniman Museum. Lewisham is the principal area of the London Borough of Lewisham. The London Plan identifies it as one of 35 major centres in Greater London, with a large shopping centre and street market.
